This series brings together 7 coins issued by the Maldives between 2008 and 2017, covering several denominations of the Maldivian national currency. It includes coins expressed in Laari as well as in Rufiyaa, the two monetary units of the Maldivian currency system, with the Rufiyaa being divided into 100 Laari.
The series consists of five face values in Laari: 1, 2, 10, 25 and 50 Laari. The 1, 2 and 10 Laari coins were minted in 2012, while the 25 and 50 Laari coins date from the 2008 vintage. In addition to these five coins, two Rufiyaa denominations complete the set: a 1 Rufiyaa coin minted in 2012 and a 2 Rufiyaa coin minted in 2017.
Coins of the Republic of Maldives traditionally feature designs related to the country's national and maritime identity. The obverse generally displays the Maldivian national emblem, consisting of a crescent and a star, accompanied by the name of the state written in Thaana script, the alphabet of the Dhivehi language. The reverse is decorated with varied representations, often related to the marine fauna or natural resources of the archipelago, depending on the denomination.
The total weight of the complete series is 30 grams, distributed among the seven coins that make it up. These issues are part of the continuity of the modern circulating series of the Maldives, intended for everyday use within the Indian Ocean archipelago. The different years represented — 2008, 2012 and 2017 — reflect the gradual evolution of Maldivian coin production over this period.
