This 5 euro silver coin was issued by San Marino in 2019 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the first crewed Moon landing, which took place on 20 July 1969 during the Apollo 11 mission. This historic event, during which astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin set foot on the lunar surface for the first time, remains one of humanity's greatest achievements.
The coin is struck in 925‰ silver, commonly known as sterling silver, ensuring a high standard of metallic composition. It has a weight of 18 grams and a diameter of 32 millimetres, dimensions that give it a fine presence in the hand while remaining within the usual standards for collectible coins of this type.
Issued to the Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) standard, this coin benefits from a superior level of finish, characterised by carefully crafted reliefs contrasting with mirror-polished fields, a process reserved for high-quality collector strikes. This type of strike particularly enhances the details of the design, including the evocative elements of the space conquest depicted on the die.
San Marino, although it does not have a central bank in the traditional sense, regularly issues commemorative euro coins under its monetary agreement with the European Union. These issues are recognised for their artistic care and their thematic character, often linked to major events or anniversaries of international significance.
The face value of 5 euros inscribed on this coin gives it legal tender status in the territory of San Marino, although its numismatic value, linked to its striking quality and precious metal content, is naturally far superior to its nominal value.
