The Monnaie de Paris struck this silver 10 euro coin in 2022 to commemorate the twentieth anniversary of the introduction of euro banknotes and coins into circulation, which took place in January 2002. This landmark event in European monetary history is commemorated through this Belle Épreuve issue, with a mintage limited to 4,998 pieces.
The theme chosen for this commemoration is La Semeuse (The Sower), an iconic allegorical figure in French numismatics. This feminine representation, a direct heritage of the coins of the Fifth Republic and the Third Republic before it, embodies French republican values. Its association with the twentieth anniversary of the euro underlines the continuity between French monetary tradition and integration into the eurozone.
The coin is struck in silver of exceptional purity of 999 thousandths, corresponding to fine silver. It has a weight of 22.2 grams and a diameter of 37 millimetres. It is produced at the Paris mint, identified by the mintmark A, in accordance with the striking standards of the Monnaie de Paris.
The Belle Épreuve quality denotes a superior level of finish characterised by careful surface treatment, distinguishing mirror-polished reliefs from matt or satin backgrounds depending on the areas of the composition. This striking process requires several passes under the coining press and gives the coin a precise and contrasted visual rendering, particularly well suited to highlighting the fine details of the figure of La Semeuse.
The face value of 10 euros is inscribed on the coin, giving it legal tender status within the French Republic. The year of issue 2022 also appears on it, anchoring this coin in the context of the celebration of two decades of existence of the European single currency in its physical form.
