Satraps of Caria, Pixodaros (340-334 BC), AR stater (didrachm), Halikarnassos mint, head of Apollo three-quarters facing to right/Zeus Labraundos standing right with labrys and long sceptre, satrap's name to right. 7.03 g.
about extremely fine, old collection tone, an interesting provenance.
BMC 5ff
From an English collection; bought Spink in 1946 (stock code G9836), with collector's ticket noting "ex-Lady Banks"; the Spink's ledger records "SSB" for the coin. Possibly ex-British Museum collection, ex-Dorothea, Lady Banks bequest (1818); ex-Sarah Sophia Banks (1744-1818) collection. A small number of items from this collection appear to have been deacessioned from the British Museum via Spink in the 1940s. This coin may not have been included in BMC Caria because the few ancient coins in the Banks collection were stored apart at the time.
