Roman Republic, L. Sentius, AR denarius, Rome 101 BC, helmeted head of Roma right, legend ARG PVB (AR ligate)/Jupiter drives fast biga right, legend L. SENTI C.F. below, control mark F, long graffito above (ΙΛΙΙΛΧ). 3.69 g.
The obverse legend ARG PVB presumably indicates that this coin was struck from silver belonging to the Roman state; this however is rather enigmatic, given that all Roman coinage in this period is believed to have been struck from silver from the state treasury - so what was so special about this issue ?
Better than very fine, lustrous. Interesting graffito.
Cr. 325/1a
