Ethiopia, Axum, Ezanas c. AD 345-80, gilt silver argyros. His draped bust right wearing ornate headcloth and earring, gilt solar symbol above/same type, but without the gilt solar symbol. Legend BACΙΛΕΥC ΗZΑΝΑC (King Ezanas). 15 mm, 1.06 g.
The exact meaning of the solar symbol is debated, but it is superimposed on a Greek X, presumably for Χριστός (Christ); it is most likely that it relates to the conversion of the Axumite court to Christianity during the reign of Ezanas.
