Macedon, Alexander III “the Great”, silver tetradrachm (17.07 g), posthumous issue of an uncertain Anatolian (?) mint, after Babylon, circa 300 BC. Monogram of ΜΕΣΗΡ or similar in wreath in left field, ΠΙ under throne. Price -, cf. 3747 (Babylon; ΜΙ under throne). Extremely rare.
While of good style, this apparently unpublished coin has certain peculiarities, for example the retrograde Σ and ligate AN in the reverse legend, and an obverse portrait style which is atypical for Babylon (but similar to e.g. the issues of Carrhae). It is likely a roughly contemporary product of a minor mint which emulated the Babylonian issue, probably in Anatolia but possibly also in Eastern Europe.
