Byzantine Empire, Justinian I, AR half siliqua (0.71 g), Ravenna c. AD 552-565. His pearl-diademed bust right, imperial legend (reading IVSTI INANVS in error)/staurogram on globe, set on small plinth, stars either side, all within laurel wreath.
Many coins offered for sale or otherwise catalogued as this type appear to me to be Gepid (or occasionally Lombardic) imitations. The original issue of Ravenna, in fine style with literate legends, such as this coin, is much scarcer.
about extremely fine, old tone. Scarce and a superbly choice coin in hand.
