Lombards, circa late 6th century AD, AV solidus (23 mm, 4.37 g), pseudo-imperial issue in the name of Justinian I. His facing armoured bust with globus cruciger, helmet and shield decorated with horseman/Victory standing facing with globus cruciger and crozier, star in left field, retrograde legends.
about extremely fine, obverse double-struck, edge nick, brushed. Extremely rare, possibly the only known example.
Apparently unpublished, but for a related coin see e.g. Numismatica Genevensis 6 (30 November 2010), lot 409 (Lombardic imitation of a solidus of Maurice Tiberius, also on a broad flan with retrograde reverse type and legends); this coin appears to belong to an earlier stage of the coinage, although later than the "transalpine" issues of tremissis, e.g. Naumann 96, lot 761; NAC 93, lot 1259 which were likely struck before the Lombards arrived in Italy.
ex-Adalbert Balvin (1891-1971) collection.
