Coin from Pontivy Hoard.
Number 71 from Pontivy region ( Morbihan ) Hoard.
In 1994 an exceptional monetary treasure was discovered by individuals on the grounds of a farm dependency in the Pontivy region. This hoard consisting of 117 gold coins was buried near the hearth of a fireplace believed to date back to the 14th century. The find was officially reported and later carefully studied by the Medal Cabinet of the National Library of France with the results published in Trésors Monétaires XXII.
This treasure is remarkably homogeneous comprising mostly French gold coins minted within a relatively short time frame. The oldest pieces include four royal gold coins issued under the reign of Charles IV (1322–1328) dated after February 16 1326. However the majority of the coins originate from the reigns of Philip VI (1328–1350) with 43 examples and John II (1350–1364) with 50 coins.
This hoard provides a fascinating glimpse into the monetary practices of the 14th century and serves as a valuable resource for researchers and enthusiasts of numismatic history.
