In the tradition of the reference work Monnaies Françaises 1789–1989, this book offers a unique approach by beginning with a detailed presentation of the various stages involved in coin production—from the initial design to the final striking. Readers will discover sketches, flan trials, and numerous control or presentation strikes—rare and often little-known elements that reflect the meticulous work carried out by the engravers and artisans of the Monnaie de Paris.
Throughout its 640 richly illustrated full-color pages, the book provides a comprehensive listing of essais and piedforts struck between 1870 and 2001. Many trial strikes are also described and valued according to four levels of preservation. A dedicated chapter at the end of the book focuses on presentation cases.
