Obverse: Lady Liberty facing left, wearing a Phrygian cap encircled with a ribbon inscribed with LIBERTY with a crown of cotton and wheat above the ribbon. E PLURIBUS UNUM on the top edge, Thirteen stars, 1879 below; M for Morgan dollar designer George T. Morgan at the base of Lady Liberty's neck.

Reverse: An eagle holds an olive branch and three arrows, symbolizing peace and readiness for war with IN GOD WE TRUST between the eagle's outstretched wings, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA above, ONE DOLLAR below a laurel wreath, which contains the designer's initial M in its ribbon. Mint mark S (San Francisco) below wreath.
