Mikhail Ivanovich Glinka (1804-1887) is widely regarded as the fountainhead of Russian classical music. His compositions were an important influence on other Russian composers, most notably “The Five” – Balakirev, Cui, Mussorgsky, Rimsky-Korsakov and Borodin, while he was the composer of two of the three most vital operas in Russian classical music – “A Life for the Tsar” (Ivan Susanine) and “Ruslan and Ludmila”.
