Brazil, 200 réis, 1889, Republic of the United States of Brazil, struck at the Casa da Moeda in Rio de Janeiro, copper nickel.

Obverse: a wreath of twenty one stars with five central stars forming the Southern Cross. The legend of this type reads REPUBLICA DOS ESTADOS UNIDOS DO BRAZIL with the year.

Reverse: the value 200 RÉIS on a lined field, framed by the positivist motto ORDEM E PROGRESSO and the date 15 DE NOVEMBRO DE 1889. Engraver Francisco José Pinto Carneiro.

On 15 November 1889 the army removed emperor Pedro II and Brazil became a republic. The new government wanted its own money, so the Rio mint struck this 200 réis in copper nickel from 1889 onward. The date 15 November 1889 on the back marks the day the republic was proclaimed. The words Ordem e Progresso, meaning order and progress, come from the positivist movement and also stand on the Brazilian flag. The Southern Cross and the ring of stars on the front stand for the states of the young republic. The coins dated 1889 were in fact made over several years, into the early 1890s. It was a plain everyday coin that carried the message of the new Brazil into every pocket.

This example has been lightly cleaned and is an attractive coin.
