Russia, bronze medal of 1835 on the completion and consecration of the Smolny Cathedral in Saint Petersburg, under Tsar Nicholas I. Engraver Heinrich Gube. Diameter 75 mm, thickness 5 mm, weight 146.11 grams.

Obverse: Christ seated facing with a nimbus around his head and his right hand raised, three children coming towards him. Masonry and a pillar behind. Below the group the signature H. GUBE FECIT. Around it a Church Slavonic legend: ОСТАВИТЕ ДЕТЕЙ ПРИХОДИТЕ КО МНЕ ТАЦЕХ БО ЕСТЬ ЦАРСТВИЕ БОЖИЕ. It means: suffer the children to come unto me, for of such is the kingdom of God.

Reverse: view of the Smolny Cathedral with its four corner churches, the dates 1748 and 1835 above. Below the view in three lines: ОКОНЧЕН В ПАМЯТЬ ИМПЕРАТРИЦЫ МАРИИ ФЕДОРОВНЫ. It means: completed in memory of Empress Maria Feodorovna.

Building of the Smolny convent began in 1748 under Empress Elizabeth, to a design by Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli. Work stopped around 1764 because of the Seven Years War, and the cathedral stood unfinished for almost seventy years. Vasily Stasov completed the building, and on 20 July 1835 by the calendar then used in Russia the church was consecrated in the presence of Emperor Nicholas I, his family and the highest officials. On that occasion the cathedral received by imperial order the name Cathedral of All Educational Institutions, in memory of Empress Maria Feodorovna. She lived from 1759 to 1828 and was the widow of Tsar Paul I. For thirty two years, until her death, she headed the Smolny Institute, and she gave large sums to public education. The dates 1748 and 1835 on the medal therefore do not mark her life, but the start and the completion of the building. Diakov rates this type R1.
