Great Britain, trade dollar of one dollar, 1901, Bombay mint, silver .900, weight 26.81 grams, diameter 39.00 mm.

Obverse: Britannia stands facing left, helmeted, a trident in her right hand and a shield with the Union flag in her left. A merchant ship lies at sea behind her. ONE DOLLAR runs around and the date 1901 stands in the exergue below.

Reverse: a flower shaped arabesque with a Chinese character at the centre and four cartouches around it carrying the value in Chinese script and in Jawi script, satu ringgit. Both sides have a Greek key border.

At three o'clock this piece carries a Chinese countermark, a so called chopmark.

By Order in Council of 2 February 1895 the British trade dollar became legal tender in Hong Kong, the Straits Settlements and Labuan. The Hong Kong Chamber of Commerce had asked for such a coin because the Mexican dollar on which regional trade rested was growing scarce. Striking took place mainly in British India, at Bombay and Calcutta, and later in London as well. George William de Saulles designed the coin without a royal portrait, since Britannia was meant to make it acceptable outside the British Empire too. In 1901 the Bombay mint delivered 25,684,971 pieces. Chinese merchants and money changers, the shroffs, punched their own mark into such silver pieces to confirm weight and fineness. Those small stamps are called chopmarks. On 1 August 1937 the trade dollar lost its status as legal tender.

Every chopmark is the trace of a merchant who once held this coin in his hand.
