Russia, silver medal for the 1791 Peace with Turkey, established on 2 September 1793 under Empress Catherine II. Oval.

Obverse: the crowned cypher of Empress Catherine II.

Reverse: the inscription ПОБЕДИТЕЛЯМ ПРИ МИРЕ ДЕКАБРЯ 29 1791. Reportedly unmarked.

References: for a similar medal, see Prince Dimitri Romanov, The Orders, Medals and History of Imperial Russia, Copenhagen, 2000, pp. 100 to 101. An example of this type was sold at Christie's, Important Russian Art, 26 November 2012, lot 360, where it realised GBP 3,500.

This medal was established on 2 September 1793 to commemorate the Peace of Jassy in upper Moldavia, signed on 29 December 1791 between the Russian and Ottoman Empires, which ended the war. It was awarded to officers, petty officers, enlisted men and seamen who had actively taken part in the war against Turkey between 1787 and 1791. The date on the reverse follows the old Julian calendar still in use in Russia at that time.
