Given the Napoleonic occupation of the Iberian Peninsula, the Royal Mint of Seville was moved to the city of Cádiz. This transfer took place in three phases:
1. On November 23, 1808, the Supreme Governing Board of the Kingdom ordered that the Cádiz Mint be founded, with machinery from the Seville Mint. 2. On January 25, 1810, the Treasury Department ordered that the Seville establishment be immediately disarmed and transferred to Cádiz. On February 1, French troops would enter the city of Seville. 3. On December 12, 1812, the materials and machines from the Madrid facilities arrived in Cádiz, when the city was evacuated.
Cádiz was the only stronghold that did not fall under French occupation and remained loyal to Ferdinand VII. In the Mint of Cádiz, coins of 8 and 2 Escudos were minted in gold, and all values were minted in silver, 8, 4, 2, 1 and ½ Real. The Mint remained active from 1810 to 1815, although not all denominations were minted every year.
On this specimen we see the assayers marks C.I. retrograde. This variant is unpublished in the reference literature. Very rare as such.
