This French banknote with a face value of 100 francs, issued on October 12, 1944, is part of the K.117 series. It represents an important historical figure: René Descartes.
The front of the banknote depicts René Descartes, seated on the right, holding a compass, a symbol of his contribution to geometry and philosophy. Behind him, Clio, the muse of History, is depicted holding a large book, evoking the importance of memory and knowledge. An hourglass is also present, possibly to symbolize time and reflection.
The inscriptions on the front indicate the value of the banknote, "100 FRANCS", as well as the name of the issuing institution, "BANQUE DE FRANCE". The engraving is signed by Ernest Deloche, while the drawing is the work of Lucien Hector Jonas. The texts are in Latin.
The back of the banknote features a bronze statue of a winged Victory, holding a shield engraved with the word "PAX", meaning peace. In the background, a rural scene illustrates the return of the harvest, symbolizing prosperity and fertility. The engraving is signed by Charles-Julien Clément and the drawing is also by Lucien Hector Jonas. Legal notices regarding criminal penalties for counterfeiting banknotes are also found there.
The banknote's watermark represents the head of Athena Lemnia in profile, a classic motif that enhances the security of the banknote and demonstrates the attention to detail during its design.
