Attica, Athens, fourrée tetradrachm, c. 454-404 BC. Hacksilber fragment (8.98 g), revealing plated edge.
The coinage of Athens was commonly cut up on the peripheries of the Greek world, e.g. in the Levant or further afield in Asia, for use as small change or silver bullion. However, in this case, the coin was a contemporary forgery, and cutting it in half revealed the base core. The plating is a good 1-2 mm thick.
Very fine, green patina on edge, deposits, old marks. Very rare fourrée hacksilber.
