Gambia 1977 – 500 Dalasis “Sitatunga” – Conservation Series – rare MS version
This impressive 500 Dalasis gold coin was issued in 1977 as part of the Gambian Conservation Series – a prestigious coin series dedicated to the protection of endangered African species.
The coin depicts a sitatunga (Tragelaphus spekii), a shy marsh antelope native to the wetlands of West and Central Africa. The reverse features a portrait of President Sir Dawda Jawara.
Minted by the Royal Mint in London , the coin is made of 900/1000 gold and weighs 33.437 g , corresponding to approximately 30.09 g of fine gold. The example offered here was issued in a rare mint condition (MS) —a special feature, as most pieces in this series were issued as proof. This issue has been certified by the NGC with a very high MS68 grade.
