Troelstra's mistake, the social-democratic leader, was a turning point in Dutch history. In 1918, in the aftermath of World War I, he declared revolution, believing that the working class was ready to overthrow capitalism. However, he did not foresee that the workers' movement was not yet prepared for such a radical step. The revolution failed, leading to a huge defeat for Troelstra and the social democrats.
After this failure, a powerful backlash followed. In 1918, a pro-monarchy demonstration was organized at the Malieveld in The Hague, where thousands gathered to show their support for the monarchy. At this demonstration, the iconic photo of Juliana waving at the Orange supporters was taken. It was a clear message from the bourgeois society, reaffirming their trust in the monarchy and the established order. The demonstration highlighted how divided the country was during this turbulent time.
