Historical Context
This porcelain medal commemorates the re-establishment of the Diocese of Meissen in 1921, originally founded in 967. Saint Benno (canonized in 1523) is the patron saint of the diocese and is closely associated with Saxon religious identity. This piece was crafted by the Meissen Porcelain Manufactory, one of Europe’s oldest and most prestigious producers of fine porcelain. It was intended as a religious commemorative item and possibly distributed among clergy or church dignitaries.
