Historical context:
This wearable bronze medal was issued under Johann Albrecht of Mecklenburg, regent of Braunschweig (1907–1913), on the centenary of the 1809 campaign. Known as the "Peninsula Medal", it commemorates Duke Friedrich Wilhelm’s role in the fight against Napoleon and the legendary Black Brunswickers. The reverse shows their emblematic skull-and-bones, symbol of their defiance and sacrifice during the Peninsular
